Divorce and child custody: 2 parts of Pennsylvania family law

Family law covers a wide variety of issues that families may face. It covers events like the adoption of a child, an agreement before a marriage or divorce. Divorce and child custody are two major aspects that are dealt with in this branch of law. Although there is such a wide range of matter with which family law deals, Pennsylvania families do not have to be confused and can have a thorough understanding of what each process entails.

Divorce can occur in a household in two ways: either contested or uncontested. While both types typically lead to the dissolution of one’s marriage, they are quite different nonetheless. A contested divorce occurs when the spouses have not resolved issues such as child custody and visitation. An uncontested divorce is one in which these issues have been taken care of and the couple has created a settlement agreement outlining their resolutions.

When there are children involved in a divorce, the issue of child custody must be dealt with as well. This can be a difficult issue to determine, especially if both parents want to play an active role in the lives of their children. Working to determine what arrangement is in the best interest of the child can create a custody situation that eases the transition into his or her new family situation.

These two aspects of family law often go hand-in-hand. Although divorce may seem like a tragic end, it also provides a new beginning for the spouses and the children. With a good understanding of each process, one can better adjust if he or she decides to move forward in a divorce. Couples in Pennsylvania looking to divorce have a number of resources available to them that can ease the oftentimes stressful process.
